Not sure if this makes things better or worse, but for what it's worth, a nontrivial number of comments on news articles in general (horrible or otherwise) are not actually from humans; think tanks and marketing firms pay huge sums for automated comments in order to influence lawmakers with fabricated public opinion metrics. In the past few years, they've moved a lot of that effort away from direct advocacy and more toward shifting the Overton window. Naturally, if you pick any terrible position, you will find no shortage of real humans who actually advocate it. They just aren't as common as the number of comments might indicate.
